Anointing oil is used in Christian communities for various reasons. Anointing of the sick is prescribed in this passage in the New Testament,

"Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord."

— James 5:14 (KJV)

The epithet "Christ" as a title for Jesus refers to "the anointed one".The Hebrew term "Messiah" (in Greek ChristosChrist) means "the anointed one", and relates to anyone anointed (dedicated to God). The person thus anointed might be a king, a priest, or a prophet... or blessed

Hebrew Bible - Researching all the Bible passages we know of about Holy Anointing Oil from the Bible and all we know about anoniting from the Bible. Here goes.

The holy anointing oil described in Exodus 30:22–25[15] was created from:

Cotswold Vicarage oil is all of the above with some Frankincense and uses hemp oil ( cannabis seeds  not cannabis flower )  ...as these are the most holy oils spoken of in the Bible and used in traditional anointing oils throughout Biblical history and all with different effects traditions and meanings, Do read on .. dear customer. These high quality glass bottles weight 65g and hold 25ml of oil.

Originally, the oil was used exclusively for the priests and the Tabernacle articles, but its use was later extended to include kings (1 Samuel 10:1). It was forbidden in Judaism to be used on an outsider (Exodus 30:33)[ or to be used on the body of any common person (Exodus 30:32a) and the Israelites were forbidden to duplicate any like it for themselves (Exodus 30:32b).. Only Kings or priests were anointed Christ thee anointed one,  King of Kings.  As history progressed modern times however there are many Church's that have continued the practise in Christianity and post Luther and coptic Church's and others have used it to anoint the sick and to heal protect and bless and is used by anyone pure of heart these days through prayer and the act of anointing..

The Talmud asserts that the original anointing oil prepared by Moses remained miraculously intact and was used by future generations without replacement, including in the future Third Temple when it is rebuilt.[ Vendyl Jones claimed that such a small quantity of oil (around a gallon) would not last that long (it is claimed that one juglet of oil lasted over 800 years). To explain this discrepancy it is claimed that one of two things occurred: Either the container of holy anointing oil miraculously multiplied (similar to Elijah's multiplication of oil for the widow of Zarephath or the Hanukkah oil miracle)[ or, following ancient customs, new oil was added to the old thus continuing the original oil for all time. Our oil in a similar van i always added to from previous blessings and so there is a continuation with layers of blessings and the original oil going back many years, Cotswold Vicarage Oil is done with the same repeated blessing and blessing upon blessing of oil on top of oil all mixd in as it is believed the multipl blessed oil mixed is more powerful and more holy.

Due to being asked by so many folks very happy with our Holy Water which is how we started ... we have finally got some Holy Anointing Oil after 2-3 years of being asked. An American made it happen by placing a pre order with no time limit. ..We are thankful to him and excited as always with our service and products that people love . This our NEWEST product and has taken years to research and produce. It is done with as much quality as possible and in keeping the cost down as much as possible..by being produced in England and not from a Church in Israel for Judaic rituals so much. ..  . A slightly rarer item for us and more limited stock but we have quite a few coming in along with the candles.. also limited supply.  This is mixed and bottled in England. The bottles are from Ireland the Olive Oil is from Italy and the Myrrh and Frankincense are from The Middle East. There is also Cinnamon from India and Cassia ( Chinese Cinnamon ) from China. A lot of things in USA marketed as Cinnamon is actually Cassia. We use both in our oils. And I presume the cannabis sativa is also from India.  ( Doesn't say )

Historically, people anointed their body to refresh themselves or anointed guests with oil as a sign of hospitality and to honour them (Luke 7:46).  all of which are mentioned in the Bible: ordinary people did this... in Christian times.
The 5 oils used in our blessed Holy Oil are:-
1. Myrrh: a purifier that symbolises life and death (Romans 6:6)—notably, myrrh was given to Jesus Christ at both His birth and His crucifixion.
When diffused to achieve a relaxed mood, inhaling the sedative scent of Myrrh is known to stabilise emotions, lift negative moods, promote the feeling of being grounded, and encourage the feeling of spiritual awakening.
2. Cinnamon: an ingredient that's connected with the cinnamon tree, which grows straight and represents Jesus Christ, the "Upright One" (Song of Solomon 1:3)—when we ourselves are "upright" and righteous, God praises our "sweet aroma" (2 Corinthians 2:14).
3. Cassia: a leaf that is associated with inner cleansing—the Bible compared it to the "refiner's fire" and a "fuller's soap" (Malachi 3:2).
4. Frankincense: is another wonderful traditional oil used in holy oil with Biblical reference.
Used in religious and spiritual rituals for thousands of years, frankincense is a symbol of holiness and righteousness. Because it is so fragrant when burnt, it was used by ancient people as a religious offering. In Christian symbolism, frankincense can represent Christ's sacrifice. Frankincense carries many intrinsic intellectual powers—which is no wonder, considering its popularity in traditional religious and spiritual ceremonies. It has a relentless insistence on independence, and tolerance for adversity, and encourages freedom of expression and clarity.
5. Cannabis Sativa which has numerous health benefits for skin and stress . This is cold pressed from cannabis seeds and not to be confused with crushing the cannabis leaves which would be illegal....There is some debate as to whether cannabis was used or not as the 5th traditional ingredient of anointing oil ..... In the Hebrew Bible, bad smells appear as indications of the presence of disease, decay, rotting processes and death (Exodus 7:18),while pleasant aromas suggest places that were biologically clean and conducive to habitation and/or food production and harvesting. Spices and oils were chosen which assisted man in orienting himself and in creating a sense of safety as well as a sense of elevation above the physical world of decay. The sense of smell was also considered highly esteemed by deity. In Deuteronomy 4:28 and Psalms 115:5-6, the sense of smell is included in connection with the polemics against idols. In the Hebrew Bible God takes pleasure in inhaling the "soothing odor" (reah hannihoah) of offerings (Genesis 8:21;[ the phrase is also seen in other verses).

To the ancient Israelite there was no oil or fat with more symbolic meaning than olive oil. It was used as an emollient, a fuel for lighting lamps, for nutrition, and for many other purposes. It was scented olive oil that was chosen to be a holy anointing oil for the Israelites.

Identification of kaneh bosem

While sources agree about the identity of four of the five ingredients of anointing oil, the identity of the fifth, "kaneh bosem", has been a matter of debate. The Bible indicates that it was an aromatic cane or grass, which was imported from a distant land by way of the spice routes, and that a related plant grows in Israel (kaneh bosem is referenced as a cultivated plant in the Song of Songs 4:14.[ Several different plants have been named as possibly being the "kaneh bosem".

Acorus calamus

Most lexicographers, botanists, and biblical commentators translate keneh bosem as "cane balsam". The Aramaic Targum Onkelos renders the Hebrew kaneh bosem in Aramaic as q'nei busma.[30] Ancient translations and sources identify this with the plant variously referred to as sweet cane, or sweet flag (nl. the Septuagint, the Rambam on Kerithoth 1:1, Saadia Gaon and Jonah ibn Janah). This plant is known to botanists as Acorus calamus. According to Aryeh Kaplan in The Living Torah, "It appears that a similar species grew in the Holy Land, in the Hula region in ancient times (Theophrastus, History of Plants 9:7)."[

Cymbopogon

Maimonides, in contrast, indicates that it was the Indian plant, rosha grass (Cymbopogon martinii), which resembles red straw.[ Many standard reference works on Bible plants by Michael Zohary (University of Jerusalem, Cambridge, 1985), James A. Duke (2010), and Hans Arne Jensen (Danish 2004, English translation 2012) support this conclusion, arguing that the plant was a variety of Cymbopogon. James A. Duke, quoting Zohary, notes that it is "hopeless to speculate" about the exact species, but that Cymbopogon citratus (Indian lemon-grass) and Cymbopogon schoenanthus are also possibilities.] Kaplan follows Maimonides in identifying it as the Cymbopogon martinii or palmarosa plant.

Cannabis

Sula Benet, in Early Diffusion and Folk Uses of Hemp (1967), identified it as cannabis.[37] Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan notes that "On the basis of cognate pronunciation and Septuagint readings, some identify Keneh bosem with the English and Greek cannabis, the hemp plant. Benet argued that equating Keneh Bosem with sweet cane could be traced to a mistranslation in the Septuagint, which mistook Keneh Bosem, later referred to as "cannabos" in the Talmud, as "kalabos", a common Egyptian marsh cane plant, as also a mosaic of the biblical "healing wonders" in the Monreale Cathedral depicts Cannabis, as well as the archeological finding in Tel Arad temple,[38] reported by CNN on May 28th 2020, proves.

In the Christmas Carol 'We Three Kings', interprets the gifts as symbolising three aspects of Christ's future life: gold representing kingship, frankincense (worship) and myrrh (power over death and resurrection ).

In Judaism, "Shemen HaMishchah," a specially prepared anointing oil, uses myrrh, cinnamon, and cassia, as well. The Torah outlines that God prescribed these ingredients to create an oil to anoint priests, prophets, and kings.
The other Biblical reference for a traditional oil used is Calamus: a sweet-smelling reed that represents how devout followers of the Lord bow to His will and exercise humility (Isaiah 57:15). This however was banned in the US for use in 1968.. due to carcinogenic effects after long term use and this is not added to our oil for legal reasons. Our oil then is LEGAL globally in every way and yet as in keeping with tradition of the Old Testament and New Testament traditions as actually used.

In today's terms, anointing oil is simply olive oil that has been prayed over and sanctified by the Spirit of God. Israelites anointed themselves and each other regularly with oil (Ruth 3:3; 2Ch.) and is used to bless and anoint people and places to sanctify, protect , keep safe , well and pure .
