1949 Press Photo Sketch of the Snake Temple in Malaya by artist E.H. Gunder
This is an original press photo. At Sungei Kluang on Penang Island, Malaya is one of the most unusual houses of worship in the world. It is Snake Temple. To the Chinese worshipers who make pilgrimages thrice each year to the shrine perched atop pure cloud cliff, the snakes which fill the temple are "pure dragons." Snakes by the hundreds twine inside lamps, around twigs on the Joss tables' earthen jars, on picture frames. They are not the object of worship. They're there only by coincidence. This sketch was drawn by AP Newsfeatures artist E.H. Gunder.Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 2-4-1949.
