In the mid-20th century, a young Kansas blacksmith named Whit H. Buck began researching various steels and their heat treatment methods in order to create a sharper, better-edged agricultural staghorn. He developed a technique to strengthen the high carbon steel used in horseshoes to make it a superior blade material, and he applied this technique to a number of farming implements, gaining a high reputation. Later, he applied the technology to knives and developed into one of the world's leading sport knife manufacturers. Buck's policy is to produce quality, solid, practical knives, and the company continues to research and develop tools with better edges and longer service life than ever before.
