This is a 17th century copper engraving of the port of Bahia-S.Salvador in Brazil, which was captured by the dutch fleet in 1624. The engraving was created by Matthäus Merian, published in Merians Theatrum Europaeum, part I, anno 1635.
The engraving measures approximately 7.5 inches by 14 1/8 inches. It is likely cut down from its original size, has creases, tears and discoloration from age. There is also a piece of tape reinforcing the bottom center fold.
Provenance: previously owned by Mr Vito Giallo. Mr. Giallo came to New York in 1949 as a young commercial artist where he served as Andy Warhol's first paid assistant in 1955. From there he opened a succession of Manhattan-based antique stores that catered to New York’s rich and famous.
