This is a large creamware jug, possibly Liverpool, is a rare example of English pottery made for the American market.
On one side in black transfer is a depiction of four sailors at their leisure smoking and drinking around a table holding a punch bowl, ladle and cups. One sailor has his cup raised, likely making a toast. Above is a banner containing the words “Saturday Night” and below in print is the words “Sweethearts and Wives.” I suspect the latter is the subject of the toast being given.
The opposite side in black transfer is trade ship, square rigged, port side view, lifeboat on deck, with 8 figures on board and flying a 15-star American flag. In 1795 US Congress adopted a flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes to represent 2 new states added to the union, Vermont and Kentucky.
The jug measures approximately 8.25 inches high, 8 inches long (from spout to handle) and sits on a 4.5 inch diameter base. There is a crack from opening on one side, and a couple of chips to base. There is also a repair to front on the ship.
