A rare Antique Window Stop or Sash Stop in the shape of Horatio Nelson, famed British Naval Hero. Made of painted pottery, these figural pieces were used to prop a window open to allow a breeze in prior to the use of weights and ropes. Alternatively it could be used as a vase.


The item measures approximately 5.25 inches high, sits on a 3.25 inch by 3.75 inch base and has a 2 inch opening. Lord Nelson died in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar, and many items were subsequently made in his image to commemorate his heroism.


Provenance: deaccessioned from the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco. Museum inventory number painted on foot but is not permanent and can be removed.
