Brian Wilson is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer who founded the Beach Boys.  After signing with Capitol Records in 1962, Wilson wrote or co-wrote more than two dozen Top 40 hits. In addition to his unorthodox approaches to composition and mastery of recording techniques, Wilson had a great sense of vocal arrangement and performance, and he is widely acknowledged as one of the most innovative and significant songwriters of the 20th century. Wilson functioned as the band's songwriter, producer, co-lead vocalist, bassist, keyboardist, and de facto leader. Some early singles included: "Surfin' U.S.A.," "409," "Little Deuce Coupe," "Surfer Girl," "In My Room," "Don't Worry Baby," and "I Get Around." In 1964, he suffered a nervous breakdown and stopped touring with the group, which led to masterpieces such as the albums Pet Sounds and Smile. Songs from which included "Good Vibrations," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Heroes and Villains," "Caroline, No," "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times," Sloop John B" and others. Wilson was the first popular artist credited for writing, arranging, producing, and performing his own material. He is considered a major innovator in the field of music production, the principal originator of the California Sound, and the first rock producer to use the studio as its own instrument. Wilson significantly influenced many artists including The Beatles, David Bowie, Elliot Smith, Nick Drake, The Flaming Lips, Pink Floyd, Neutral Milk Hotel, and others.. Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #12 of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time
