 In 1977, US Air Force specialists conducted a comparative analysis of the Boeing 747 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 civil wide-body aircraft to determine which of them was better suited for creating an aircraft for aerial refueling of US strategic, tactical and auxiliary aircraft, as well as for the transfer of troops, cargo and military equipment. As a result of research under the ATCA (Advanced Tanker/Cargo Aircraft) program, it was determined that the DC-10-30CF design provided the best opportunities for creating such an aircraft. McDonnell Douglas was awarded a corresponding contract for the development and production of 60 tanker aircraft, designated KC-10 Extender.
