English version

Gloria Tamerre Petyarre (c. 1938–2021) was one of Australia’s most celebrated and successful female Aboriginal artists. Born at Mosquito Bore in Utopia, Central Desert, Northern Territory, she belonged to the Anmatyerr language group. Like her sisters (including the renowned Kathleen Petyarre), she began her artistic career in the late 1970s with the Utopia Women’s Batik Group before transitioning to acrylic painting on canvas in the late 1980s.

Her work quickly gained international recognition. She held her first solo exhibition in 1991 at Australian Galleries in New York and exhibited widely across Australia, Europe, North America and Asia. Her paintings are held in major public collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and have been acquired by institutions such as the Louvre in Paris. Gloria Petyarre is particularly known for elevating the “Bush Medicine Leaves” and grass Dreaming themes to iconic status in contemporary Indigenous Australian art.

This vibrant acrylic painting on canvas, titled Antywere Small Grasses, exemplifies her mature and highly distinctive style. Using bold, rhythmic, elongated brushstrokes in luminous pink, yellow, green and orange against a deep black background, Petyarre creates a dynamic, almost pulsating surface that captures the movement and vitality of small desert grasses (Antywere in Anmatyerr language). These grasses grow at Mosquito Bore, one of the artist’s key ancestral sites. The composition reflects her unique ability to translate the spiritual energy of the land — its seasonal cycles, wind movement and regenerative power — into abstract yet deeply evocative visual rhythms.

The work is accompanied by its original certificate of authenticity from Walonia Aboriginal Art Imports (Netherlands) and a rare archival photograph of Gloria Petyarre herself holding this very painting. Stretched on a rigid aluminium support and ready to hang, it measures 60 x 90 cm and presents in excellent condition.

A powerful and culturally significant piece that brings the living spirit of the Australian outback and Anmatyerr Dreaming into any contemporary interior.
