Figurative slit drums are special commissions, used for societal occasions such as weddings, celebrations of harvests and other ceremonies.

Drums are among the most important art forms in Africa, used both as a musical instrument and as a work of sculpture significant in many ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals, story-telling and communication of messages. Slit drums, with hollow chambers and long narrow openings that resonate when struck, often take a human or animal form in which the drum becomes the body.

About the item: This slit drum includes two matching drumsticks which can be stored in the hollow chamber. Elaborate braided coiffure and elongated neck. Fine patination and good form, balance and symmetry overall.

The piece measures 22" in height and approximately 5" in diameter in the torso. It has minor nicks consistent and natural cracks in the wood caused by aging which enhances the piece. See photos.

I purchased the piece in 2004 in Nzerekore, Guinea, an area experiencing heavy displacement from neighboring Liberia.
