The shamisen is one of the traditional Japanese musical instruments that have been handed down in Japan for 400 years.
The Chinese sangen, from which the shamisen is derived, was introduced to Ryukyu in the 14th century, and entered Japan in the Eiroku period (1558-70) at the end of the Muromachi period (1336-1573).
At that time, the instrument was called jakehasen because it was made of snakeskin, but biwa players who played it to accompany kouta (short songs) and odori (dance songs) began to improve it when the snakeskin was torn.
The shamisen, which is played with the plectrum of the biwa, is said to have been born in Japan.
The shamisen developed in Edo during the Kan'ei period (1600-1868).
Shamisen production became active along with the foundation of shamisen music being laid by master craftsmen.
The difference is that in the Kansai region, the neck making, which is an important part of the shamisen production process, is done by the division of labor, while in the Tokyo region, it is done by a single craftsman.
Shamisen that are custom-made to suit the player's needs produce a pleasant tone.
