Elrathia kingii
Wheeler Shale Formation
Millard County, Utah
Cambrian Period 510 MYA

Trilobites were a large group of marine arthropods, which are invertebrate animals characterized by a segmented body and hard exoskeleton (crabs and lobsters). The first trilobites appeared over 500 million years ago in the Cambrian Period, and spread worldwide until the Permian mass extinction about 250 million years later. Their hard outer shell made them a great candidate for fossilization, and as a result they appear frequently in the fossil record. Over 25,000 species have been described!
