The Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea 'Nigra') is a striking biennial or short-lived perennial known for its tall, sturdy spikes adorned with funnel-shaped, deep black-chocolate flowers, highlighted by a bright buttery-yellow throat. Blooming in mid to late summer, these showy flowers create a dramatic contrast in gardens, providing architectural height and an old-world charm to borders and cottage gardens. Typically reaching 5-8 feet in height, Black Hollyhocks thrive in full sun and adapt to a range of soil conditions, from normal to sandy or clay types, with a preference for well-drained soil. While rust can be a challenge, especially in humid climates, this plant remains attractive to pollinators like butterflies and hummingbirds, contributing to the biodiversity of the garden space.
