1940 Press Photo Spanish Secretary of State visits with Fascist leaders in Rome
This is an original press photo. Rome. Usually the visit of a diplomat to Rome and Berlin is followed by the entrance of a new country into the Nazi-Rome orbit, or the entrance of the Fascist armies into the diplomat's country. But here we see Serrano Sumer, Secretary of State of Spain, visiting the Fascist leaders in Rome, after having visited Hitler in Germany. The object was to bring Spain more closely into the war. Spain, however, still recovering from the terror and privation of the last (civil) war, has voiced a memurrer and at the present moment is only a passive ally of Germany and Italy. Sumer is near the left, with the criss-cross brocade on his hat. Next to him is count Ciano and on the other side of Ciano is Von Mackensen, German ambassador to Rome.Photo measures 8.5 x 6.75 inches. Photo is dated 11-09-1940.
