1954 Press Photo Well Points at Belle Chasse Tunnel Site in Louisiana
This is an original press photo. These are well-points lowering the water table at the Belle Chasse tunnel site. The level of water-saturated subsoil was lowered 24 fee by 381 wells like the 15 shown here. Workmen pour thousands of gallons of concrete into steel meshing such as this, shown within a steel coffer dam, to form a three foot thick concrete slab which will form the base for the Belle Chasse tunnel. the 800 foot long tube, when completed, will be 42 feet below ground at its lowest level, but the work is being completed in dug out sections above ground, according to Palmer and Baker, Incorporated, consulting engineers. The tunnel will later be enclosed and will form the Highway Number 31 roadway beneath the Algiers cut off canal.Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 09-21-1954.
