This is an original press photo. Hugh Downey of Kansas City, Missouri, poses with his wife, Marty, and 19-month-old son, Hugh Mikael, in Keren, Ethiopia, where he has built an orphanage and hospital. Called "Mr. Hugh" by hundreds of villagers and nomads, Downey started his efforts in behalf of the Ethiopians in 1963. The governor-general of Eritrea, an Ethiopian province, asks: "Why can't you send us more American like Mr. Downey?" Photo measures 10.25 x 8 inches. Photo is dated 10-22-1970.
