GERMAN WWI IMPERIAL / BRAUNSCHWEIG
Ernst August 's Cross of Military Merit 2nd Class
Rare Non-Combatant Version
with Original Ribbon

Imperial Germany - Brunswick: Ernst August 's Cross of Military Merit 2nd Class, EA2.
The Cross was instituted by Duke Ernst August in 1914, initially in a single class (the 2nd class like
this example). It was awarded regardless of the rank of the recipient, for merit in action.
In 1918 the Cross was amended with the addition of the 1st Class in a form similar to the Prussian
Iron Cross 1st Class. The up to 1918 single class cross became the 2nd
Class of the award. The Cross is rare in both classes as the Duchy
had at the time less than 500.000 inhabitants.
