A rare find indeed, this antique gold washed silver serving spoon features a full figure mermaid with outstretched arms supporting the bowl of the spoon while her tail wraps around the handle.  The handle is topped with a raised face and neoclassical shell.  Although unmarked, the piece is likely by Karl Adolf Seipel (1820-1891) of St. Petersburg, Russia.

The elaborate detailing found on the handle extends to the back of the gilded bowl where raised scrolls and flourishes swim around the mermaid’s face.

Measurements:  quite large at 8” long.  It is 1-11/16” across the bowl.

Weight:  nice weight of 78.5 grams.

Unmarked and tests as silver.  Matching Adolf pieces are 84 zolotniki = 875/1000 silver.  Thus, 875 silver.

Condition:  the gilding has faded some, typical surface scratching to the bowl.
