Peppermint Linux is a lightweight, stable, and cloud-centric Linux distribution that is based on Debian and Devuan Stable, and formerly on Ubuntu. It uses the Xfce desktop environment and aims to provide a familiar environment for newcomers to Linux, requiring relatively low hardware resources.

Peppermint is unique for its approach to creating a hybrid desktop that integrates both cloud and local applications. It ships with the custom Ice application, which allows users to create site-specific browsers (SSBs) for cloud applications, enhancing web integration. The distribution also supports installing packages from Ubuntu-compatible repositories, allowing users to run cloud-based applications alongside desktop software.

The operating system is designed to be minimalistic, shipping with few native applications and focusing on web integration. Peppermint’s namesake comes from Linux Mint, with the idea of providing a “spicier” version of Mint that is less demanding on resources and more focused on web integration1.
