"Southern California had to come from behind to defeat Stanford 13 to 2 this after noon but when the Trojan horse started galloping after the intermission there was nothing the Indians could do about it.
Thirty thousand spectators, Including James Roosevelt, son of the President, saw the home team take an early lead with a safety, three minutes after play started. Oliver Day, starting Southern California quarterback, juggled a long high Stanford punt, finally recovering It under a pile of Stanford tacklers behind his goal line.
POINTS LOOM LARGE
The two points presented the Indians loomed large on the score board as the teams left the field at half time for a stout defense kept the visitors back in their own territory most of the time.
The Indians one real first half threat came when Glenn Hamilton's deadly pass to Bill McElroy advanced the ball to Southern California's 24-yard line a few seconds before the second period ended.
RETURNS PUNT
Throughout the first half the Trojans had completed many short passes but could not connect with the longer tosses. Their sight's were lengthened as they rested and midway in the third period they manufactured their first counter.
Granville Lansdell ran a Stanford kickback seven yards to Stanford's 43-yard line. After two passes failed Lansdell passed to Bill Sangster, and the goat of last year's game started on his way to being a hero today by making a first down on the 31-yard line.
Lansdell followed with a pass to Bill Hoffman for a first down on the 18-yard line and then, after two passes miscued, Lansdell flipped a short pass to Sangster, who ran 14 yards for the touchdown. Phil Gaspar added the extra point with a kick from placement.
The final Southern California credit came in the last quarter and was counted by Mickey Anderson, playing for the first time in three weeks. The fast back needed only three plays to score from the ten yard line after Sangster Intercepted a pass on his own 25-yard line and ran to the 40. The Trojans went on from there in a series of short thrusts.
Harry Smith of Southern California and Stanley Anderson of Stanford were tossed out of the game for belligerency. Later on half a dozen combatants squared off midfield."
