Shisa is a lion, which is the guardian deity of Okinawa who drives away monsters and disasters. Today, Shisa has become a symbol of tourism in Okinawa, not only as a talisman but also as a symbol of happiness, and is loved by many people as souvenirs such as figurines and key chains.
They are placed with something they want to protect on their backs, facing the direction from which misfortune will invade, and some come as a single figure while others come in pairs. There are two Shisa pairs, a male and a female, with the one with an open mouth being the male and the one with its mouth closed being the female.
