Fort Fetterman , a strategic site on the North Platte River was built by the 4th US Infantry in 1867, protecting the Bozeman Trail. The Big Horn, Yellowstone and Powder River Expeditions began at the Fort.  An Original Fort Fetterman General Order issued April 16, 1870 at HQ  Dept of the Platte, Omaha, Nebraska, detailing the courtmartial of 6 enlisted men of the 4th US Infantry at Fort Fetterman, charges including leaving a post as sentinel, playing cards using metallic  centre-primed ball cartridges as stakes,
 Desertion, creating a disturbance while a prisoner in the guard house and striking the sergeant of the guard. The sentences include confinement at hard labor wearing a 12 pound ball and chain. The order bears a page 1 lower margin red ink notation "Headqrs Ft Fetterman, Wy Ter". The order was issued by command of General Augur and is ink signed on page 5 by 2nd Lt Rufus P (Porter) Brown , 4th Infantry, as Post Adjutant. 0
