Grandal graduated from the Free School of Fine Arts and studied Museography and Museology at the Museum of Fine Arts in Havana. He worked as a graphic designer and at the age of 20 began his path in photography, from which he forged an extensive body of documentary photography focused especially on urban life, everyday events, and the idiosyncrasies of the people. In the early 1990s, he began residing in Venezuela, where he also produced a fundamental body of work distinguished by the use of black and white. He participated in over 60 collective and solo exhibitions in Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, the United States, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary, among others. His biography highlights the exhibition he did with American photographer Walker Evans, "Cuba 1933-1992. Two visions".

Grandal se graduó en la Escuela Libre de Artes Plásticas y estudió Museografía y Museología en el Museo de Bellas Artes de La Habana. Trabajó como diseñador gráfico y a los 20 años comenzó su camino en la fotografía, desde el entonces forjó una extensa obra de fotografía documental especialmente centrada en la vida urbana, en el acontecer cotidiano y la idiosincrasia del pueblo. A principios de la década de los años 90 comenzó a residir en Venezuela, donde también realizó una obra fundamental que se distingue por el uso del blanco y negro. Participó en más de 60 exposiciones colectivas y personales en Cuba, México, Brasil, Venezuela, Estados Unidos, Francia, Suiza, Alemania, Italia, España, Hungría.  En su biografía aparece destacada la que realizara junto al fotógrafo estadounidense Walker Evans, «Cuba 1933-1992. Dos visiones».
