USS WARD: this fine 314 foot Wickes Class destroyer was built in Mare Island, CA and

commissioned in 1917. The vessel was recommissioned in January 1941 and went on

to earn nine WW II battle stars for Pacific Theater actions. These including eight battles

as a high speed transport APD-16 landing troops on enemy held islands and fighting

air attacks. In December 1945 the ship participated in the Battle of Leyte in a 15

ship convoy that was attacked by enemy heavy bombers at San Pedro Bay.

One of the bombers was hit by gunfire and crashed into the USS Ward starting a

major fire that engulfed the vessel. After fire fighting failed, she was sunk by gunfire

from the USS O'Brien on 7 December 1944. Seller has over 90 covers for the ships
