Manuel Castellanos López is a Cuban artist who studied at
the National School of Art (ENA) in Havana, Cuba, between 1965 and 1970. His
first solo exhibition, "They Are as They Are," took place at the
Gallery of Havana in 1976. In 1979, he presented his exhibition "Drawings
and Engravings by Manuel Castellanos" at the Small Hall, National Museum
of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba.
He has received various awards for his work, including the
"First Prize in Drawing/Second Prize in Engraving" at the National
Salon of Teachers and Instructors of Plastic Arts in 1973, National Museum of
Fine Arts, Havana. In 1974, he won the "First Prize in Drawing, IV
National Youth Salon of Plastic Arts," National Museum of Fine Arts,
Havana. In 1977, he received an "Honorable Mention" at the Biennial
of Illustrations BIB'77, Bratislava, Czechoslovakia.
His work results from an unprecedented singularity; as seen
through microscopes, his tiny drawings come together whimsically to form new
figurations. The skillful detailing in these small figures betrays the mastery
of a magnificent illustrative technique.
