Although a native of Alabama, Jay's ties were all Purple and Gold. His parents both attending LSU in the years just before World War II, his father lettered at LSU. His older brother, Fred, also earned three letters at Tigertown as a defensive tackle in 1967-69. In addition to his tight end post, he was the Tigers' placekicker his senior year, hitting 39 extra points and 7 field goals. Earned a medical degree and practices in Baton Rouge.
