Abram Royer Brubacher (1870-1939), President of University of Albany from 1915 to 1939, was the individual most responsible for the transformation of the State College for Teachers into a genuine collegiate institution. He raised admission standards for students and promoted scholarly research by faculty. He also emphasized graduate programs, and during his tenure the number of master's degrees awarded rose dramatically. His 1927 book, Teaching: Profession and Practice, deals with every aspect of teachers' lives from good grooming to professional training for "their broader social and political roles."
