Castello di Nipozzano
Marchesi de Frescobaldi
Tuscany
Frescobaldi embodies the essence of Tuscany, its extraordinary vocation for viticulture and the diversity of its territories.
Frescobaldi’s uniqueness stems precisely from the representation of this diversity, from its estates and from wines which express a kaleidoscope of aromas and sensations, springing from the characteristics of each individual terroir
Behind every Frescobaldi wine lies the passion of our agronomists and oenologists, who know our vineyards and terroirs down to the finest detail. Their art, creating quality wines, requires the iron rule of respect. Respect for our tradition, which guides us, even in the midst of innovation or avantgarde solutions. Respect for Tuscany, our living land, to be cultivated in harmony and serenity. Respect for each individual terroir, borne of a unique combination of soil, altitude and microclimate, each giving us a wine with its own matchless personality.
Castello Nipozzano - Frescobaldi
Built as a fortress to defend the city of Florence, Castello Nipozzano is the most famous and "historic" property of the Frescobaldi family since the year 1000. In popular tradition, Nipozzano means "senza pozzo" = without wells, a water-scarce zone, therefore, that was excellent for the cultivation of vines. The first evidence of the quality of Nipozzano wines dates back to the Renaissance period, when great artists such as Donatello and Michelozzo Michelozzi used to order these wines.
A unique peculiarity that emerged from this area is due to the foresight of a wise Frescobaldi ancestor who, in 1855, invested the sum of 1,000 silver florins to introduce grape varieties previously unknown in Tuscany, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 100 years later, the fruits of this wise decision could be reaped, namely in the form of Mormoreto, the flagship wine of the winery.
Mormoreto
This is the great wine of the Castello, from the vineyard Mormoreto planted in 1976. The first vintage was from the 1983 harvest, and since then has been produced only in the most favourable years. It was not produced from the harvests of 1984, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1998 or 2002. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, planted 150 years ago, have, over time, formed an intimate bond with this terroir and now bring out all of its unique qualities. It is a wine of great depth, opulent and refined, that you can cellar for many years.
Climatic trend
The harvest at the historic estate got under way on September 3rd and concluded on October 18th with the picking of the
Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The quality of the 2001 production appears very good. The considerable heat
experienced in August did not stress the vines, since they enjoyed good water reserves after the rains in July.
