János Kandid Golenszky (May 19, 1913 - July 8, 1977) He was a religious teacher, chapel director. He entered the Cistercian order in 1931. In 1934, he studied theology in Innsbruck, where he received his doctorate in 1938. He was then ordained a priest in the town of Zirc in Hungary, then became an abbot's clerk and college teacher. He also worked as a scout leader for many years. He wrote several good books on religious topics. From 1940, he became a religion teacher in high schools in Budapest. After the war, the communists dissolve the monastic orders (1950). From 1948, when the schools were nationalized, he became unemployed. 1956–61: several times he was summoned by the police for 1-2 days and then interned. Later came back to serve as a priest until his death in 1977. A raw translation of a memoir about Father Kandid (info here with some photo of Father Kandid: magyarkurir.hu/hirek/az-en-szerzetesem-ciszter-kandid-atya) "In my childhood and youth, I knew Dr. János Golenszky, ordinarily Father Kandid. Although unfortunately he has not been with us for nearly four decades, his smiling face lives vividly in me. Father Kandid was a Cistercian monk and religious teacher. I was happy to discover his youth photos in the memory book of the regular high school, including a picture of him in a scout uniform. He often mentioned with pain that he could only be in his profession as a monk teacher for a short time, barely ten years. After the violent dissolution of the order, he was one of the luckier ones, he was able to take over the archdiocese of Esztergom and continue to serve as a priest. The memorable way in which he did this is shown by the fact that a marble tablet preserves his memory at his place of service. I was a small child when I started ministering in the Holy Spirit Chapel (Budapest, Ulászló street). Not only did we belong to the area of the chapel, we also had a family connection here, our grandfather held the office of vestryman. I learned to minister from him. Father Kandid was also humane as an employer. When our grandfather became seriously ill, he allowed us, the grandchildren, to replace him until his death, with great zeal, but certainly with more mistakes. Our relationship with Father Kandid later became even more friendly, and they became good friends with our father. I gradually moved up the "ladder" of ministers. Even today, I am proud of the fact that I was the number one minister of the chapel for many years. For years, Father Kandid held religious classes for high school students in the capital. He also taught children and youth in the chapel with great zeal. Learning folk songs was a permanent part of religious classes, Father Kandid sang beautifully and played the harmonium well (the chapel didn't have enough for an organ at the time). Even today, wherever I go to mass, I am happy to discover that I still remember most of the chants. He respected and loved the liturgy very much, every solemn mass and ceremony was preceded by a serious test to know what and how to act in front of the altar. I was lucky enough to see how seriously and regularly he prepared for his sermons. Order and precise work were a feature anyway. He was painfully affected when several years' worth of material was taken during a house search. The latter, however, even found the meaning of this: "after a while, I might have been inclined to take out my older speeches, but this way I am forced to prepare again and again". I have a nice memory of his silver mass, even today I don't know how so many believers fit into the small chapel. The celebratory speech was delivered by the superior (principal of the high school), dr. Frigyes Brisits held it. Unfortunately, he did not get his golden mass. When he started to get sick, I, as a health care student, was able to take part in his care. Here I could learn from him how to accept the works of corporal mercy in a Christian way. According to his will, he lies in the coffin in the reverend of the cistern. Even if she could not freely wear her favorite clothes in her life, she found the ultimate peace in him. He awaits the resurrection in the crypt of the Cistercian church in Székesfehérvár. You can buy an ext.rare, GRADUALE CISTERCIENSE (1941) here https://www.ebay.de/itm/354742577354 |
