Background:
Émile Louis Vernier (29 November 1829 – 24 May 1887) was a French painter and lithographer. He was known for his marine scenes.
Émile Louis Vernier was born on 29 November 1829 in Lons-le-Saunier, Jura. The family moved to Besançon where his father owned the Café Granvelle. He was enrolled in the Royal College of Besançon, for a military career, but was allowed to move to the Besançon school of drawing, and then to enter the studio of Collette, a well-known lithographer. He submitted his work to the Paris Salon for the first time in 1857, with several lithographs after Maurice Sand.
Vernier married Maria Vauthier on 27 June 1861. In 1867 he exhibited two paintings of the country around Besançon and several lithographs after Jean-Jacques Henner, Jean-Joseph-François Tassaert and Gustave Courbet. These demonstrated his great ability in adapting to the style of different artists. He would receive several medals from the Salon, and in 1869 and 1870 was a member of the admission committee for the etching and lithography section. He visited Spain in 1872 with the landscape artist Paul Vayson. In 1873 he won a medal at the Vienna World Exposition. He visited Venice in the spring of 1874. In 1880 he won a second class medal at the Salon, and had a great success at the Besançon exhibition.
Émile Louis Vernier died in Paris on 24 May 1887. He is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris
Léon Auguste Adolphe Belly 1827–1877
Belly was a French landscape painter, born at St. Omer, in 1827. He studied under Troyon, and in 1849 visited Barbizon where he came under the influence of Théodore Rousseau.
In 1850–1 he travelled to Greece, Syria, and the Black Sea. In 1853 he made his debut at the Paris Salon, exhibiting four landscapes of Nablus and Beirut, and of the shores of the Dead Sea, which attracted critical acclaim. In 1855–6 he visited Egypt, travelling up the Nile in the company of another painter, Edouard Imer. A second trip to Egypt in 1856 was largely spent making studies for his painting Pilgrims going to Mecca, now in the Musée d'Orsay.
As well as his paintings of Middle Eastern subjects he painted portraits and landscapes of Normandy and the Solognethroughout his career, and in 1867 bought land at Montauban. He died in Paris in 1877.

What is an Antique Map

The word Antique in the traditional sense refers to an item that is more than a hundred years old. In the past maps were sold in two forms, as a single sheet (broadsheet) or bound in an atlas or book. The majority of antique maps for sale today come from books or atlases and have survived due to the protection offered by the hardback covers.

When considering a purchase

The first thing to determine when staring a collection or purchasing an item, is what is important to you. Most collectors prefer to build their collections around a theme. You may decide to collect maps from one region or country, charting its development through time. Similarly you could collect maps of one particular period in time, by type (i.e. sea or celestial charts) or by cartographer. The collector might also want to consider the theme of cartographical misconceptions such as California as an island or Australia as Terra Australis or the Great Southern Land.
The subject is so wide that any would-be-collector has almost endless possibilities to find his own little niche within the field, and thereby build a rewarding collection.

Starting a collection & pricing

Pricing is based on a number of different factors, the most important of which is regional. In any series of maps the most valuable are usually the World Map and the America/North America. The World because it is usually the most decorative and America because it has the strongest regional market. Other factors that come into play re: price is rarity, age, size, historical importance, decorative value (colour) and overall condition and quality of paper it is printed on.
As specialised dealers, we frequently work with first time map buyers who are just starting their collection. Guiding new collectors on their first antique map purchase and helping new collectors to focus their interests is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an rare map dealer. So please do not hesitate to and we will be happy to help with any questions you may have.
