The Schneider 77mm True-Net Black 2 Filter is designed to purposely create a net diffusion effect within an entire scene or image. Embedded inside this filter's glass is a black-colored stocking material that softens focus and reduces glare, which can be useful for creating a more flattering image of a subject or scene. The stocking material's black color can help maintain a scene's existing color balance and contrast. By applying the Schneider 77mm True-Net Black 2 Filter instead of pulling a stocking directly over a lens, the desired net diffusion effect can be consistently and reliably obtained by eliminating the risk of overstretching or tearing the stocking material in use.

When the respective film type or white balance setting that corresponds to the primary light source is selected, those combined diffusion, contrast, and color effects can be obtained while this filter is used on a film camera system or on a digital camera system. Film cameras with black-and-white film installed or digital cameras configured to record monochromatic footage or imagery can utilize the Schneider True-Net Black 1 Filter's diffusion and contrast effects only.

This filter has a grade of 2. Grades of 1 or 3 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase.


Schneider True-Net Beige Filters that can add a warming hue to the entire scene or image are separately available. Schneider True-Net Gray Filters that can help maintain a scene's existing color balance but with a greater reduction of contrast are also separately available.

At NAB, Schneider were showing their new True-Net Filters. In this age of high resolution shooting many cinematographers are using diffusion filters to soften up their images. There are many options available on the market, but none that are quite like the Schneider True-Net Filters.


As the name implies, the True-Net diffusion filters are Schneider’s answer to recreating the look you get from putting an old silk stocking on the back of your lens. Instead of having to grab an old stocking, you can now just put a filter in front of the lens to achieve a similar look. Schneider’s new True-Net filters come in seven different versions.


According to Schneider, after lots of research, they managed to developed a technique to sandwich hosiery made on the same knitting machines since the 1950s, between their hallmark crystal clear water-white optical glass. Like the company’s other professional cine filters, they are laminated, and protected from edge chipping with Schneider’s Edge Seal, which also reduces edge reflection and edge flare.

 


TIP HOW TO PROLONGING THE LIFE OF YOUR FILTERS


Filters, like all crafted optics, are susceptible not only to breakage, but to premature aging caused by environmental factors. Most filters are made up of several layers of materials consisting of glass, dyes, optical cements, chemical compounds, particles etc. Even with protective measures employed, there are many factors that can still affect the longevity of the filter: moisture (prolonged exposure to humidity), excessive heat and excessive light are the most common environmental causes that can affect the filter’s chemistry over time.



To protect your filters and keep them in great working condition for a long time (along with the rest of your camera gear) we recommend making sure to keep the filters stored in a dark, cool, and dry place when not in use. The use of filter pouches or specialized cases will also keep your filters safe from breakage when not in use. If you are in a humid environment, the addition of fresh silica gel packs or a dehumidifier in the room they are stored is also highly recommended. Protecting your filters as you would your camera lenses will ensure many years of use of your filters.


 
 
What do you recommend cleaning filters with?
 
Hand blower first, if it's just light dust,that usually handles it.  If you need to clean further, a Kim Wipe sprayed with Tiffen/Pancro Lens Cleaner, work in a circular motion from the middle out.
