You are buying a genuine used Ford computer. This computer has been updated to the latest Ford calibration for your VIN# using factory Ford IDS reprogramming software. Then the PATS anti-theft system was deleted in the calibration.
- Your PATS system is malfunctioning. The theft light is blinking rapidly, and your Explorer/Mountaineer won't start. PATS can be expensive to fix, plus you may have to tow your car to the dealership. As these vehicles get older, they really aren't worth sinking a lot of money into. Deleting PATS is a cheap and permanent fix.
- Engine swaps. If you want to put an Explorer 5.0L engine into a different car using the stock Explorer computer, then unless you swap in the PATS module, transceiver module, ignition lock cylinder, and PATS keys, it's just much easier to delete PATS when putting this engine into some other type of vehicle.
- Expensive keys. The special PATS keys cost more money, and then you have to get Ford or a locksmith to program the keys to the vehicle. Deleting PATS allows you to use cheap hardware store keys, that don't have the PATS chip in them.
- Reliability. If the system doesn't exist, then it can't leave you stranded one day.
- No programming. You don't have the hassle of programming the additional keys, or of hiring a locksmith or Ford dealer to program the initial 2 keys. You can just have a copy made at the local hardware store for a couple bucks, and it will work.
Not only has this PCM had the PATS system deleted, but it was also updated to the latest Ford calibration first. You would spend a lot more than the cost of this PCM just to buy a used computer, and have it programmed to your VIN#.
Ford builds a computer calibration and installs it in your vehicle on day one. From that day forward, Ford will learn about small mistakes they made in the calibration, and for the first couple of years they will come out with occasional updates to the calibration. If you came into the dealership complaining about one of these same mistakes that others did, Ford would perform these updates for free under warranty. After your warranty is up, or if you never complained about anything, your PCM may never have received these updates.
If your computer has hardware type MLC-496 or MLC-496A on it's sticker in small print, then this PCM will work for you! We just need your VIN number.
I have several of these PCMs. They have all been updated to the latest Ford calibration. Then they were each modified to turn PATS off permanently. You will get one of these at random.
The picture is representative of the computer you will receive, but the cosmetic condition and the exact catch code of the PCM you receive may vary. Some will be pretty looking while others might be a little more rough. All will work. All will start the vehicle regardless of the PATS key programming. They are all tested to make sure they power up, and are all updated to the latest Ford calibration for your VIN#, so we know they will communicate just fine.
Note: PATS works by turning off your fuel injector pulse when the PATS module tells the PCM that it is not happy with the code the key is sending. The PATS system will also not be happy if it cannot talk to the engine computer. Once you delete PATS in the PCM, the computer will no longer talk to the PATS module. This will also make PATS unhappy, and the theft light WILL blink rapidly once PATS has been deleted, for about a minute after starting the vehicle. This happens once PATS has been removed, because the PATS module can't get the engine computer to talk to it any more. You can ignore the rapidly blinking THEFT light once you delete PATS, because it will not be the cause a no-start condition any more. You can expect the theft light to blink rapidly when one of these PATS deleted PCM's is installed. It will go out in about a minute after startup. If this bothers you, you can always pull the theft light bulb out.
