WHAT'S A FAHNESTOCK CLIP?꞉ A Fahnestock clip is a spring clamp electrical terminal for connecting bare wires. It is still used in educational electronic kits, electronics teaching laboratories, by radio enthusiasts and model railroaders. The clip is designed to grip bare wire securely, yet release it with the push of a tab. The clip was originally patented in the United States on February 26, 1907.  We have included a digital copy of the original United States Patent Application drawings in the listing's photographs for your reference.

The original clips consisted of a single flat piece of springy metal, bent over itself to form a clip. Pushing down on the end of the metal tab opens a hole through which a bare or stripped wire can be inserted. Releasing pressure allows the tab to spring back, closing the hole and gripping the wire to form an electrically sound mechanical connection. Pushing the tab again releases the grip on the wire so it can be withdrawn.

Where the Fahnestock Company really cashed-in on their patent was through licensing and sales to battery companies.  Tens-of-millions of these clips were affixed to early radio and telephone batteries, such as the Ray-O-Vac Radio "B" Battery No. 2303 (30 cells, 45-volts); Sears, Roebuck and Company Radio "B" Battery (22½-volts); Eveready Radio "B" or "C" Battery No. 766 (22½-volts); Eveready Columbia Gray Label Long Life Telephone Cell; Eveready Portable "A" Battery No. 742 (1½-volts); Eveready Radio "C" Battery No. 771 (4½-volts); Burgess No. 6 Giant Telephone Dry Cell (1½-volts) and many others.  Some batteries contained as many as six of the clips.
