This is an original "'stampless' letter" (it's real deal--this is NOT a reproduction) that was folded and sealed and then taken to the post office by the writer and mailed.  It can also be called a "stampless folded letter."  You are purchasing both the postal portion and the original letter.

ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that  the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter's journey.  In addition to being collectible because the addressee or the town from which it was sent, it is a collectable item of postal history because of the rates, markings and usage.

An 1844 " Red Creek N. Y. Dec 17 " Manuscript Cancel on a Folded Legal Document with a "Paid 6" rate.

The letter is datelined "Red Creek, December 17th 1844" and is saluted "Dear Sir."  The letter is addressed to "John Carpenter, Esq., County Clerk, Oswego."

Content "Please put the following entitled case upon the calendar for the next Oswego Circuit and oblige, John W. Cary.  

The case is James Harper, represented by John W. Cary vs. Elias Haiska, Represented by Giles & Wright.

Nice Wayne County Town Marking.  I do not notice any damage.
