From the Preface: 'The present bibliography has been designed to provide both the expert and novice with a representative sampling of both monographic and periodical literature on African archaeology, including exhibition catalogs. Emphasis has been placed upon types of materials providing both data on the excavation results from specific sites as well as regional syntheses and discussions on the development of the discipline as available. For the purposes of this volume, no limitation was set as to language of publication. The time span covered begins with the 1826-27 folio drawings of Meroe by Frederic Cailliaud and extends to the end of 1989.'
