DETAILS

Good condition.

Published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1904. RARE Hardcover with dustjacket, now in mylar. Jacket has some significant chipping and rubbing wear on all sides. Cover edges have some moderate to heave rubbing wear, but overall the book remains clean. Endpapers have discoloration from the jacket flaps. The binding is cracked in the middle of the book (see photo) but none of the pages seem loose or yet at risk for falling out.

John Cecil Clay, 1875-1930, was an American illustrator known for genre and caricature paintings. He was a student of Henry Siddons Mowbray at the Art Students League of New York and had a graphic style that was suited to illustration. A recurring subject was pretty young women, such as the plant-women in this collection, “In Love’s Garden.” Alongside Clay’s paintings is his own compilation of romantic verse. The format is reminiscent of Les Fleurs Animees by the French caricaturist Jean Grandville in which he portrayed women in the guise of flowers.
