Reel tapes were meant to be played dull side against the heads only.

If you are playing the shiny side, because otherwise they sound backwards, you are probably playing a 4 track reel on a quarter track player.  If you need to listen to a 4 track tape on a quarter track deck, (such as TEAC x-1000R), turn the tape label to the deck and play (dull side of the tape) from right spindle to left, backwards. (Two of the heads are closely aligned for this). Most 2 track tapes sound mostly normal on a quarter track deck played right to left, (forward).
