This is an antique manuscript notebook full of construction specifications for projects done by Leeds Sanitation including the sewerage system, Leeds waterworks and Reservoirs.

This has all been handwritten by H.C. Valentine, Lieut 3rd ? Div Engineers, Leeds England May 1919.

Very interesting actually to myself as I grew up as a young lad at Leighton Reservoir which this hand written note book talks about.

89 pages which are written in an ink and very easy to read.

Index to the front which has such subjects as

LEEDS SEWERAGE SCHEME - LEEDS WATERWORKS - LEIGHTON RESERVOIR - EMBANKMENT - TRENCH - DISCHARGE TUNNEL - VALVE SHAFT - 33" PIPE LAYING - WASTE WEIR - BY WASH - CATCH WATER - CEMENT SPECIFICATION FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE SERVICE BASIN.

It then goes on to say about the Leeds Sewerage Scheme history being constructed in 1856 and more work done in 1874 and this present scheme in 1908.

He then goes on to say about the population of the Leeds city 1874 being 270,000 and 1908 being 470,000 and Leeds being an area of about 21.572 acres and predicted population in 1938 being around 650,000 and rateable value, and average daily water flow per head of population. Storm water is talked about and land being bought at Knostrop ( Temple Newsam ) 600 acres purchased for £231,000. And chemical treatment plant with capacities all about each bacteria bed and specifications. Stormwater and sludge.

Even a drawing of TYPE QUANTITY SHEET which has number of item / quantity amount / how measured / description of work / price of work / rate/ each item / total amount in £-s-d.

Pages 8 - 19 are about LEEDS WATERWORKS Reinforced concrete service reservoir at Farnley  with all specifications of the reservoir construction and extent of contract which is really fascinating reading actually.

Pages 20 - 30 are about the Specification of Concrete used by Leeds Waterworks...again very interesting reading if you are into this sort of work.

Page 31 - 65 starts with a date 29-7-19 and its relates to LEEDS WATERWORKS SCHEME which was known as the URE VALLEY SCHEME and contract being LEIGHTON RESERVOIR capacity 1.136.000.00 gallons in 1907. with a very interesting read about the construction of all of the reservoir features.

Page 66 - 75 are about the Filter beds at Headingley.

In amongst the written words are pages that have a green folded tracing paper like paper on them with TRACED maps and reservoir construction plans. Some of the creases are brittle and the tracing paper is loose on these folds. There are 7 fold out plans.

In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear.

A really interesting book and I wonder who this chap H. C. Valentine was.. in the front his name and a rank of Lieut in the 3rd ? Division Engineers.

Interestingly too if you look into the Leeds Corporation they wanted to build 6 reservoirs in this area for the catchment of the city in 1901 for sanitary infrastructure and only Leighton was ever built. It was supposed to be built in 10 years and they built the workers camp in Colsterdale known as Leighton Construction Camp at Breary Banks between 1908 - 1911 but was late and was finally finished in 1925. The main reason for the delay of work was WW1 and work was suspended in 1914, Breary Banks camp was taken over by the army and the Leeds Pals did their training up there, their various earthworks from their zig-zag trenches can still be seen in some nearby fields as well as their shooting range. It became a German POW camp as well in the first world war era and work got started again on Leighton reservoir between 1919 - 1921 and it was finally finished in 1925.

The other nearby reservoir Roundhill was owned by Harrogate Corporation.

It measures approx. 7 inches x 4 and 1/2 inches.
