A CHILD OF CONEY ISLAND 

     Childs was one of America's first national restaurant chains. It lasted from the late 19th century until the early 1950's. The first Childs was launched in 1889 by brothers Samuel and William Childs on the ground level of the Merchants Hotel (current site of One Liberty Plaza, also previously the Singer Building) at 41 Cortlandt Street (between Broadway and Church), in New York City's Financial District. This is where Occupy Wall Street took place. It was also the site of one of our 2 vending stands in lower Manhattan previous to 9-11.

     But the restaurant's most famous location was on the Coney Island boardwalk in an architectural landmark that still stands today. Neglected for many decades, it was painstakingly restored to its original splendor and is now the Ford Amphitheater.      Dated 1910-1940's, bearer name and serial number may vary. Very bright crisp and clean. Red ones may have 3 tiny slits in left border where the stock was fastened into the company's ledger book (there is no paper loss so they can be backed with a piece of tissue tape). Pinhole cancellation outside vignette. There may be an occasional removable staple in which case there can be an interesting transfer document attached (easily removable).
