- THE RESIDENCE OF D. WADSWORTH ESQ. -
- NEAR HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT -
Original 1831 steel engraving published by Fenner Sears & Co.
NOTE: Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848) was Cole's patron, and founder of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, where the original oil painting of this work is on display.
This Hudson River School engraving was one of a dozen prepared by Thomas Cole for Hinton's The History and Topography of the United States, published in London between February and October of 1831. Cole's work is discussed pages 107-111 in Elwood C. Parry's The Art of Thomas Cole; Ambition and Imagination, University of Delaware Press, 1988.
The artwork measures 3.75" x 5.5" and is printed on heavy paper measuring 7" x 10.5" with nothing printed on the reverse.
This is absolutely guaranteed to be an original 1831 engraving, not any type of modern reproduction.
In very good condition.
My family has been in the antiques and design business since 1955!
