RAMSEY LEWIS - ANOTHER VOYAGE - FROM THE CADET LABEL 827 WITH CLEVELAND EATON BASS - PHIL UPCHURCH GUITARIST - MAURICE WHITE PERCUSSIONS Ramsey Lewis records are the like the Ford Taurus' of the digging scene: fairly common, always listenable, and very reliable. But let me revise the definition. In the decaying staying stacks of one-sample albums and over-priced funk 45s, Ramsey rises like the phoenix from the moldy fires! Yes, it's been while since I've listened to my Ramsey albums, but damn, I forgot how incredible they are. Just check out songs like "Wanderin Rose(1)" and "Bold And Black(2)" and remember what we're talking about: simple gorgeous shit with awesome drums. Even perennial snoozers like "My Cherie Amour(3)" are turned into wonderful breakbeat floaters. "Uhuru(4)" and "Do What You Wanna(5)" fill the gruntal funk quotient, then throw in the likeable Ramsey ballads, and you have a complete album, worthy of all crates. 10 tracks, recommended. "Another Voyage" is a trip through every corner of Lewis' style. The hodge-podge of styles blend to form a great album. I also quite enjoy the way funk-elements like crowd-noise and background-yelling are found throughout the album.

At times more jazzy and more funky than "Down to Earth" but never as dirty and raw in its sound, this Ramsey Lewis album features his trademark groovy piano and organ sound with my favourite track being the Bob-James-Nautilus-like track "Bold and Black".
