The Japanese knotweed injector is currently being used by many knotweedtreatment professionals, and plant and wildlife trusts. Offering a verycompetitive alternative to the vastly more expensive products out there.
Japanese Knotweed is an ever increasing problem. A highly invasive weed, itcauses significant and costly damage to structures and surfaces, and most banksor building societies won’t lend on property with knotweed close to thehouse.
Japanese Knotweed, once seen as an exotic ornamental plant, has now become aninvasive nuisance – so much so that it is an offence to plant or cause it togrow in the wild. Stem Injection has become an increasing popular, safe andeffective way of control.
Stem injection is an alternative to foliage spraying, which can affectother nearby plants. By injecting a concentrated dose of glyphosate herbicideinto each individual cane approximately 20-30cms from the base of each cane(between the 1st and 2nd nodule). Approximately 5mls of herbicidemix is injected into each cane. The application of glyphosate based productsare most effective for the treatment and eradication of Japanese knotweed. Thismethod of direct injection of herbicide is highly effective as it is absorbedthroughout the rhizome and deep into the plant's root system, helping tocompletely eradicate the troublesome plant.
Stem injection is far less risky to both to the environment and neighbouringplants.
The stem injection system works by delivering a measured dose of concentrateherbicide into the centre of the plant rather than just to the surface. Thismeans the treatment is extremely localised, only ever targeting the plantsinjected and preventing the environmental risk of drift spray, run off orcontamination of watercourses and other sensitive vegetation. The weed willalso absorb the concentrate into its rhizome (root) at a much faster rate thanwith folia spraying, providing a quicker resolution to the Japanese Knotweedproblem.
Other traditional methods all have some practical flaws. Chemical spraying canharm other plants and wildlife in the area, is expensive and by no means100%effective. Digging out the weed is even more expensive, must be repeated anumber of times to remove any trace of roots or rhizonic growth and must be disposedof as hazardous waste, filling valuable landfill sites with huge quantities ofcontaminated soil.
So, the precise control, the speed and the practicality of an injectiondelivered herbicide appears to be the obvious solution. The fact that it can beapplied in all weathers throughout the growing season of April to October hasalso been a major advantage - a silver lining to this summer's plentifulclouds, enabling treatment to carry on undeterred by the constant downpours.
