______________________

Ono Goten refers to Zuishin-in Temple, located in Ono Goryō-chō, Yamashina, Kyoto. It was also known as Ono Monzeki and Mandara-ji Goten.

Zuishin-in was founded in 991 by the Buddhist monk Ningai. It became an important Monzeki temple, a prestigious temple closely connected with the Imperial family and the aristocracy.

The temple is also famous for its connection with Ono no Komachi, one of the most famous female poets of the Heian period. Several sites associated with her remain within the temple grounds.

During the Edo period, Zuishin-in had a significant economic foundation. Historical records give its holdings as approximately 612 koku.

Of particular interest to collectors of Japanese hansatsu, historical records mention “Ono Goten (Zuishin-in), 612 koku” and a type of note called Goshūfuku-gin Tegata (御修覆銀手形). These were silver notes associated with the temple and its financial activities.

A record from 1860 (Man'en 1) mentions a 1-monme silver note, the Ono Goten office, and an Osaka redemption office. These details closely correspond to the inscriptions found on this note.

This makes the note an interesting example of a temple-issued silver note associated with Zuishin-in (Ono Goten) in Kyoto.
