  • Le Cygne – Camille Saint-Saëns – X-87900 – matrix 5499o
  • Gavotte Ancienne – Jean-Marie Leclair – X-87901 – matrix 5500o

Recorded in Paris in 1906, these two sides preserve Jules Boucherit's violin playing at an early stage of his career. The pairing of Saint-Saëns and Leclair is particularly evocative of the French violin tradition: the lyrical line of Le Cygne contrasts with the elegance and historical character of Leclair's Gavotte Ancienne.

Jules Boucherit and the French violin school

Jules Boucherit (1877–1962) occupies an important place in the history of the French violin school. A pupil of Jules Garcin at the Paris Conservatoire, he won a Premier Prix in 1892 and became a violinist of the Concerts Colonne. His career subsequently combined performance with an increasingly important role as a teacher.

Appointed professor of violin at the Paris Conservatoire in 1920, Boucherit trained an exceptional succession of musicians. Among the violinists associated with his teaching were Ginette Neveu, Christian Ferras, Ivry Gitlis, Michèle Auclair, Devy Erlih and Serge Blanc. His pupils helped carry the French violin tradition well into the twentieth century.

This 1906 Zonophone therefore documents not merely an accomplished French violinist, but the playing of a musician who would later become an important link in the transmission of the French violin tradition to a new generation of internationally celebrated performers.
