SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S FEATURE: A handwritten presentation inscription on the half-title page, apparently written and signed by the author, Ernest Chesneau, and addressed to “Monsieur Landsberg.” It reads: “Monsieur Landsberg / Hommage de son très obligé / Ernest Chesneau.” The autograph has not been independently authenticated. The identity of the recipient has not been conclusively established.
This work surveys European national schools of painting and sculpture, Japanese art, and the influence of international exhibitions on the future of art. The title page bears the date 1868; publisher Didier et Cie, Paris. The printed dedication is addressed to Princess Mathilde.
BINDING & CONDITION: Period-style marbled boards with dark leather spine and gilt bands. Attractive antique patina. Visible rubbing and wear to cover edges, corners and spine, with age-toned pages and scattered marks/spotting. Please examine all photos closely for the exact condition of this 150+ year-old book. Completeness has not been independently collated.
