______________________

Zenkō Nyorai is associated with Zenkōji Nyorai, the principal Buddhist deity worshipped at Zenkōji Temple in Nagano, Japan. Zenkōji Nyorai is a form of Amida Nyorai (Amitābha Buddha), depicted together with Kannon (Avalokiteśvara) and Seishi (Mahāsthāmaprāpta) Bodhisattvas in a distinctive three-figure arrangement.

According to temple tradition, the Buddhist image was brought to Japan from the Korean kingdom of Baekje in 552. It was later taken to Shinano Province by Honda Yoshimitsu, whose name is traditionally associated with the origin of Zenkōji Temple.

Faith in Zenkōji Nyorai has long been associated with the chanting of the Buddhist invocation to Amida Buddha (nembutsu). Zenkōji Temple has also been widely revered as a place of worship open to people regardless of social status or gender.
