This sale is for a hard-to-find large size edition entitled “Demeter of Cnidus,” by Bernard Ashmole (1894-1888) illustrated with two pages of sketches and with 16 pages/plates of black-and-white photographic illustrations.

It was reprinted from the Journal of Hellenic Studies, Vol LXXI in 1951.

The Demeter of Knidos or Cnidus is a life-size, seated ancient Greek statue that was erected near the ancient port of Knidos (now modern-day Turkey).  Demeter was the goddess of agriculture and of fertility who created the harvest, the grain and other crops as well as the circle of seasons.   The British archaeologist Sir Charles Thomas Newton excavated The Demeter of Knidos in 1857–58 and removed it to London to become part of the British Museum's Ancient Greek and Roman collection.

Bernard Ashmole MC was a British archaeologist and art historian, who specialized in ancient Greek sculpture. At the time of publication he was Keeper of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum, a post he held from 1939 to 1956.

He also held a number of professorships during his lifetime; Yates Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology at the University of London from 1929 to 1948, Lincoln Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art at University of Oxford from 1956 to 1961, and Greek Art and Archaeology at the University of Aberdeen from 1961 to 1963.

The book measures 10.75 inches x 7.5 inches and has 28 pages + 16 pages of photographic plates.

The book is in good, internally neat condition large sized softback of its age, with wear to the spine (a little loss at the top). There are NO inscriptions/book-plates and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages.
