Vintage Soviet photographic print reproducing an important World War II image taken in Novorossiysk on September 16, 1943, during the first hours after the liberation of the city.

The photograph shows Colonel General Ivan Yefimovich Petrov, commander of the North Caucasian Front, meeting and speaking with Soviet Marines associated with the 393rd Separate Marine Battalion, formed in part from the famous detachment of Caesar Kunikov.

The 393rd Separate Marine Battalion took part in the assault and liberation of Novorossiysk in September 1943 and was subsequently awarded the honorary designation “Novorossiysk.”

The wartime photograph is attributed in museum sources to photographer A. S. Sokolenko.

This example appears to be an early postwar Soviet photographic reproduction, probably dating from approximately the 1950s. The print has excellent sharpness and photographic detail.

The reverse bears extensive handwritten Soviet-era identification describing General Petrov and the 393rd Separate Marine Battalion.

Size: approx. 128 × 178 mm (5.0 × 7.0 in).

An excellent historical image connected with the Battle of Novorossiysk, Soviet Naval Infantry and the North Caucasus Front.
