🐧 Some notes of this type have watermarks. Watermarked examples are believed to be from an earlier issue. However, as these notes came to be issued in larger quantities, the watermark was discontinued.

🐧 This bill was issued by the Kawauchi-gumi (Kawauchi group), which functioned as a construction organization. It was most likely used for wage payments. From the time of its issuance, these bills were probably used in a manner similar to hansatsu (domain-issued paper money).

🐧 In fact, this note was issued under the authority of the Nagasawa family. During the Edo period, issuing hansatsu required permission either directly from the shogunate—the highest authority at the time—or from an individual or family that had been granted the privilege of note issuance by the shogunate, often in exchange for a fee. This particular note was issued after such rights had been obtained from the Nagasawa family, who held the shogunate’s authorization to permit the circulation of hansatsu.
