Bemerkungen
With a dedication from the author to Gretel Wagner. - A few minor bumps, but otherwise in good condition. - From teh text: Medieval furniture of the early and middle periods is as rare in Germany as anywhere else. Excavations under Cologne Cathedral in 1959 revealed the remains of a bed and a chair that had belonged to a sixth-century Frankish prince. These were fairly simple pieces, made of wood, for the most part turned and skilfully put together. They are almost the only examples known of an output that must have been maintained throughout several centuries. Charlemagne’s stone chair of state (end of the eighth century) survives at Aachen, and in Goslar Cathedral is a throne, made in the mid-twelfth century, almost identical in form with Charlemagne’s. The twelfth and, still more, the thirteenth centuries have left us a quantity of ecclesiastical furniture-benches, reliquary-cupboards and chests. What prevented them from being destroyed was the fact that they were treated as objects of veneration rather than of daily use.
